ACID STAINING

Acid staining is one of the original decorative concrete options. The stains are primarily earth-tones and resemble the look of natural stone, marble, granite, and wood. They offer a unique marbling effect and color variation, which comes from a chemical reaction with the concrete. Because every piece of concrete is different, no two floors ever look the same.

Acid staining has one big advantage over other concrete coloring options – it is the only stain we have found that is truly UV stable. This characteristic makes it ideal for use on exterior slabs, patios, walkways and driveways. Let us help you transform your exterior space.

The Acid Staining Process

Acid staining is a process in which a chemical reaction occurs between metallic salts within the acid stain and the hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) in the concrete. The acid’s purpose is to lightly etch the surface of the concrete allowing the metallic salts to penetrate for a deeper, longer-lasting color. Because it is a penetrating stain, it does not fade, chip, or peel. To enhance the color of the stain and provide a more resilient surface, we apply a penetrating sealer after neutralizing the acid. Depending on the condition of the concrete, a light grind may be necessary prior to staining for a smooth, consistent surface, and for optimal stain and sealer penetration.
